Pure male Jack Dempsey.

Blue Acaras look almost and I stress almost because there are some differences Like Green Terrors when they are young. I have seen pure JD that have the red on top like this one does, However I have never seen a JD especially young ones that dark with those coloration, but in this day and age I guess anything is possible. I would still guess some sort of Hybrid.

It's dark because it is stressed and I was thinking when young almost all JD's have red across the top of their dorsal.

Wow I learn something new everyday. :) Every fish I have ever seen stressed lost their colors instead of intensify them. I know during breeding time they intensify or when they are the dominant one or when they become comfortable with their surroundings. I will keep that in mind next time I bring fish in. Thanks

dude, that fish isn't stressed at all. it gets weekly 50% water changes, and is the dominant fish in the tank. and it can't be stressed because of any new surroundings, because its been in the tank for over a month. ;) . and stressed fish lose colour, they don't intensify them.:screwy: i was thinking that it might be a hybrid too. could it be a blue acara x jack dempsey? i think that it is also very likely that is could be a pure jack, but i guess i won't know for sure until it is full grown.:)

must be the pic or the fish then because I have never seen a JD that is almost black that was not stressed. Not all fish lose color when stressed I KNOW that.

I think a better way to put it would be stressed fish become more drab. With lighter colored cichlids that means lightening with darker based cichlids they get darker and you can not see their colors as well.
