Depends on if it contains Silica or not.. Silica is very bad for rays.

Even without Silica, make sure you rinse very thoroughly, to get out any super-fine particles that might bother the ray.

Is it still acting funny? The way the lighting sparkles off the black substrate, really makes me wonder if its not ray-safe. Even if it's from the shop, most shops dont know much about Rays.. They see a sand, and it's automatically ray safe.. because Rays love sand and they bury themselves in it.

oh that sand is what they have it on, i dont actually have it yet but hes holding it for me until i can get the tank all ready. its a 120 gallon for now untill it grows out of it, and the tank's all cycled and ready i just havent got a substrate in it yet and it kindda looks bare. the ray is eating but not very active. im not sure about that, is this type more nocturnal? or is its inactivity a bad sign.

Consider keeping your 120g barebottom until the ray is grown up and well established.. It takes a while for them to adapt, but when they do it's much easier to feed and keep a very clean tank with no substrate.

Take your time and find a good fine gravel that you are completely sure will be ray safe.

sounds like a good plan to me, thanks for the help. =)

good luck and show the final result ;)
