I wouldn't have said fenestratus either - I think your retailer has no clue what they sent you and is just guessing(same as us). I thought juvie fenestratus had a more solid lateral line as well as vertical bars. I'm growing out Lago Catemaco fenestratus but not regular fene, so I'm not sure. My guess is still bifa. Grow the fish out and keep posting pics, I'm curious to see how it matures.

Also, I would not use that online source for fish again. They don't seem to know what they are doing. I'd stick with Jeff Rapps, CoA, or Cichlid Connection - just some sources with good reputations. Hobbyist fry from this site would work too.

Dude ive grown out quite a few viejas and i can honestly say that is a. Not a argetea b. not a syn and c. Not like any fen ive seen. Doesnt look like anything pure ive come across at the same size so it leads me to believe its a vieja hybrid of some sort.

Thanks for taking the high road. Sorry this happened to you. When in doubt always ask for references on online fish stores.

Order from Dan or Rapps. You'll never have this problem again.

And I have to agree with Woofy doesn't look like any I have grown out but i'm still no expert. Most of these species dont really get distinguishable untill 4+". Grow it out.

Just for comparison sake, here are some shots of juvenile 'Vieja'. The fenestratus is still small, but the others are now older and larger. In order: (1) fenestratus [Rio Antigua], (2) hartwegi, (3) argentea, (4) synspilum, (5) bifasciatus [Chacamax], and (6) bifasciatus [Candelaria]. The photos posted by the OP are difficult to reconcile with any Vieja I know. But Drew and others are correct that you really need to grow them out to be sure. For example, the bifas in the pics below (~2") lack the characteristic dark patch on the upper flank, but these same fish (at 4-6") now show those patches prominently.
