Well, I did the right thing today and took my redtail catfish back to the store after reading everything about them on this site. I had one as a kid, and he got taken back to th store when I moved to college at 18 inches and a year old. He was being kept in a 45 gallon and looked happy and healthy at the time, so I figured why not get another? The other one was cool, right? I must have either been ignorant to his problems, neglecting the fact that he couldn't turn around in his tank, or just being selfish and possessive. Either way, I had read to much to be a bad pet owner this time. I had wanted to take him back a month ago, but the day before I was going to do so, he was almost murdered by my Zonata. He had no top fin or tail left after being in my 135 over night and being the same size as the other fish. I immediately took him out the next day and nursed him back to health (also learning stuff on this site). I wish I could have kept him because they are so interesting, but I didn't want to own a fish I couldn't care for.

I was kind of torn however, knowing that in all likelihood someone else, with likely an even smaller tank, will purchase him and he may face a worse fate than being with me, but I didn't want to be part of his problems and thought the small chance that he would find his way to a large enough body of water be it huge tank or pond was motivation enough to let him go. I hope I did the right thing.

I love catfish though and want to get another one. I have a 135 (6X18inch base) and considered a lima, even though they could outgrow the tank as well. They grow slower however and might be a better option, but I thought I might face the same issues at some point. What do you think?

I also saw some other people posting about bullheads. Do you think my cichlids and bullheads would be happy at any common temperature? I saw arguments for both positions throughout the forum, so some more detailed answers would be awesome. I really would like to have a catfish in the tank again, but to be honest I haven't seen that many that wouldn't outgrow my tank that I think are interesting at all, so I am kind of thinking bullhead, lima, or nothing. I think the catfish harming Zonata would have to go to get one of these in there, but if would work, I think I would really like to do so. Thanks for any feedback!

BTW, I will recapture my RTC dreams one day, but that is a long time and lots of water away.

Limas are a fish all their own with their upside down verticle standing the the tank corners...they are an interesting species for sure. Bullheads are usually out and about kind of catfish, and very attractive I think anyway. A Sun Cat would also work IMO...they usually dont get over 14" in the tank...I have heard they can get upwards of around 16" but honestly the largest Ive ever seen has been maybe 12". They are a beautiful catfish expecially in the right lighting.

u definitely did the right thing. whatever happens to that RTC in the future is not in your hands. you've played ure responsible part in ensuring that the uve done all u can do to help improve the quality of the fish's life. well done. next time research and plan b4 u buy it though. - prevention is always better than cure. peace.

What about a synno ?? They very in size (depending on species) and can handel their oun around cichlids.

Maybe I will give the lima a try. I looked up some of the other recs you guys made and just didn't seem that drawn to them. Thanks anyway. I really like the predatory catfish build more. I found one fish one planet catfish called a Hemibagruspunctatus (here's the link: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=435) that looks amazing. It says that the standard length in 15.7. Anyone seen one of these anywhere? Also, anyone have any experience with the temperature issue with bullheads and cichlids?

Any time you try new mixes of fish you run a risk. Sometime it will work for a while until something triggers a reaction in one of the fish. Personally I anways have alternate tank space ready for any of our fish...just in case.

I read the description of the Catfish your looking at...I would be very concerned about the reported aggression level. From the way it sounds they kill what don't eat and that's not much...

Good job. Hopefully it will make it into the right hands. Just remember that even in the right hands small rtc have a high mortality rate. They are just so prone to desiese when smaller it's unreal. Tsn are much more hardy at a young age in my expiriences. Good luck on finding a catfish for you. I love my limas one is 14 1/2" after 11 months, and the other is only like 11 or 12" after a year and a month. So it really varies, but my big one shows no signs of stopping it's growth so just be prepared for anything. My big one ate 4 jumbo shrimp last night. I was trying to feed my marble x rtc hybrid after moving it to the larger tank, and the lima kept eating all the shrimp lol. Normally he's good with one, but last night he took 4 before they hit the bottom. Makes my stomach hurt just to look at it lol.

I've never seen Hemibagrus Punctatus for sale. Its an awesome fish good luck finding one...but be careful the two Hemibagrus that are commonly availible (even then they aren't THAT common:)) are ussually too aggressive to be kept with tank mates.
