I Did the Right Thing With My RTC Today; I Think...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sounds like it will be a lima. I don't need a catfish that is going to beat up my other fish, though that species does look amazing. I actually saw someone selling one on this site when I did a search for the name. I think that guy was in England though. Limas seem cool, and I've always thought about owning one. I guess I will pick one up this week.

UNLESS, someone has an argument for the bullhead being a suitable fish to keep with cichlids...

Try a Lima! They can drive you nuts when they stop eating for no apparent reason, but they are beautiful fish. Mine is about 6" long and real mellow. He's grown about 2" in the three months I've had him. He's housed in a 125g with a 30 gallon sump with a clown knife and gar and they all get along fine.

Wow, that's a huge lima! I have never seen one that big. Hopfully, my lima won't approach that length, assuming I get one. I think I am going to do some more reading before I decide on the lima, but right now, a lima seems like the most obvious choice.

However, I am still very interested in a bullhead. I really like how they are built and have heard that they are very active.

Kntrygrl4lyfe - I have my temp at 79 right now and read that I would need to lower the temp to at least 76, but I wondered if that would be a less than optimal temperature for both the bullhead (who might like it colder) and the cichlids (who might like it warmer), would I basically be sacrificing the happiness of both types of fish just to get them in the same tank? If so, I don't want to do that. If this isn't an issue, I think I am going to go the bullhead route. I just can't find any consensus or firm information on this issue and don't want to make the uneducated purchase/catch of a bullhead like I did with the rtc. If you know about this issue and could give me some feedback, I would really appreciate it.

limas are actually very beautiful fish in terms of how slender and graceful their bodies are built. the only reason y id pick a tiger shovelnose over it is because i prefer size. other than that. GO LIMAS!

Oh my, Id say bullhead for sure. All you lima people... lol

Like ive said in other post, Ive kept them in unheated tanks, Ive kept them in heated tanks of around 80, and they have been out in my pond all summer and winter, this summer has been hot this year. For the longest time it was in the 100s. I dont know what the pond water was out there but, I find them more active with warmer waters. I think it would do just fine in a tank like that. What kind would you get? or try to get? I have some spotted ones, and one yellow.

You know you could also do a syno of some type if you cant get a bullhead. Alot of people keep those together
