if you read up on bichirs... they are peaceful but are predatory meaning if your fish is small enough to fit in there mouth then they will eat it.

I'm sorry for your lost. I feel you. I lost one GATF to my bichir few months ago, too, just the night before I planned to move the bichir. 
I'm sorry for your loss & I understand how you feel about losing your favorite fish.
I once had a haitian cichlid that was only 3 inches for about 2 months.
I went out as usual on weekends to come home & see that he had died, turns out my heater for some reason did not turn it died from water temperature.

Actually, my vatf doesn't really fit in the mouth. The bichirs just ate the eye, the tail and bit the center of the body.
