I dont know why, but I want a pike cichlid now!

I cant actually show you, but i have that it is not uncommon for some of them to get 20'' but most I have seen stop at about 15'' so its probably uncommon in aquaria. Maybe wild caugt specimens?

Would a jag and a pike actually meet eachother in the wild or do they live far apart from eachother? I dont want my tank looking unatural.
 
Jaguar cichlids (p. managuense) are from central america, pikes are from south america. I have looked around for any info on pikes in CA but have found none. I kept a jag female and a c.sveni together for months and all was cool. They sort of came up together though. They should be ok as long as the tank is big, with lots of cover, and you start them off small.
 
I cant decide now if I want to different types of pikes with different coloring, or an atabo and a jag.

I was going to use sand as my substrate and plant some java fern about the tank, maybe some amazon swordtails in there aswell for extra cover?

I'm going to try and find a large piece of bogwood for the pike(s) to hide under or some terracota pots.
 
Adding several different species of pikes isn't really such a good idea. Pikes are pretty conspecific...in otherwords, as subadults and as adults they really don't like other pikes...simple as that. Only way you can really successfully keep them together is if they are a pair...even then it can be tricky. You could do a pair and the jag...or a pair of both fish, as they will both be a match for each other easily. It would probably be best to do a single pike and a single jag. There are other cichlids you could put in there along with the pike and jag as well, so your options are limited...;).

As for the plants, the pikes will be great with them, the jag not so much. They are hell'va annoying diggers, and live plants have little chance of surviving because they are so constantly dug up and moved. The driftwood is a super choice. The java fern MIGHT work if you attached it to the driftwood in several places.
 
I'm going to look around for some nice pieces of drift/bog wood.

I found this one piece but didnt have a tank to put it in the had kind of a hangover and formed a little cave. I dont remember were it was though.

Do you think a Jag, Pike, and Senegal/ornate bichir could live in my 125 for life? I just kind of want at least three fish. I wish you could mix pike! I like to many kinds and I wish I could mix one of my favorites with another favorite and keep them with the jag. Could I put in some cloud tails/tetras as target fish or dithers?

Oh, I just thought of something! In a 125 couldnt I get a pair of Peacock bass and a Pike? Would the Pbass eat the plants? I want to use plants and lots of bogwood and drift wood to make caves like what you wouls see in a river.

Also, if I went to a local river and got bogwood from there could I use it aslong as I boiled it?

Awww. That sucks! I want some so bad. I like the Orios alot.

I like Jags, but I want something that would live near Pike in the wild. Pike and Bass just seem like a good combo but to bad my tank is to small!

Any suggestions?
 
Maybe you could just skip the "middleman" and just get a 240+ gallon tank instead of the 125! :grinno: If you are like me, you are going to want a bigger tank eventually anyway. And this way, you could get the jag, pike, and some peacock bass in there! :drool:

I have a 100g planted with a silver aro, 2 flagtails (prochilodus), a couple of fancy *** plecs, and a 9'' c.sveni. There is a ton of driftwood as well as an assortment of swordplants. Its almost scary to see how well those fish get along. Its like peanut butter and jelly, the perfect combo of fish.
