As long as you're feeding them a VERY little amount each time, I wouldn't think it would hurt them. I the wild, they eat whenever they can.

agreed... just be careful not to overfeed and watch your water quality

I didn't question your fish's ability to survive being on the floor for 8 hours.

I was just pointing out your curious feeding behavior and suggesting that you consider the advice you have been given.

By introducing food periodically threw out the day its the exact same as if the fish just worked there way down a river finding more food, the fish that I feed this way keep searching for food weather i provide it on not.

Now, I'm not a marine biologist, and I'd be willing to take any logical input, but my fish are a bounds and leaps more athletic and far brighter and healthier then when I purchased them.

With the community tank I have taking kdrun76's input into consideration, but I have not seen an negative impact in my fish's behavior so other then for the technical reason on how there digestive system works, I see no reason to change it. HOWEVER, thats the whole reason I created this thread, despite how cocky i started it :P which was also explained.

In regards to my JD, I openly admitted to being aware of the nutritional value of the food he ate, excluding the pork, which i've since removed from his diet, not that I would consider it part of his diet :nilly:

I understand his diet isn't 100% perfect tho I don't starve him to make him eat the wide variety of food he does, he just gets opportunity to eat whats in my hand when he starts attacking the glass trying to get at me.

How long have you been feeding like this? It will shorten their life span. So you may not realize this until they are dead. Then you will wonder what happened because there will be no obvious signs of disease, and they only lived for a year or 2.

The "technical reason on how there digestive system works" is the reason this is not a good way to feed your fish. Until you understand that, you are not keeping or feeding your fish in a way that is best for them.

I thought you were supposed to eat small meals throughout the day when you are trying to bulk up. He has made it clear that his fish are doing fine and is unwilling to change his feeding habits unless there is a scientific paper that clearly dictates that feeding fish small amounts throughout the day is detrimental to their health. If you do not mind the excess waste produced and the water changes that accompany such frequent feedings then that is your deal and do not be surprised if your fish do not live that long.

last 3 two 4 weeks I've been feeding them a few times over the day, have a few larger fish that eating everything before the smaller/weaker ones could get to it, and I wanted to make sure they where eating.

But, if this is going to end up harming my older stock and there is no real way to verify that is. I'll just have to follow blindly and find a more effective way of feeding my smaller stock.

Thanks for the help.

irony that you posted that as I caved.

I would rather stick to the diet I have them on but, it seems to be consensus that it will shorten there life span...and I would rather not be the reason for my own downfall.

If the fish was eating it,it was part of it's diet.

That is true. But, I assumed that someone would come in and read it as if I was feeding him a big piece of pork, and some pizza, and a bunch of feeders daily...as this thread, combined with the quote from the other, seems to take a big chunk of credibility out of my fish keeping ability.
