I feel Stupid. What Species.

What is your justification for harvesting then? There are already a lot of bloodlines going around.

CITES can be a great thing, but it has many flaws that need to be fixed. I can't even begin what is wrong with it. A lot of endangered species are not on, and a lot of common species are listed as endangered.

Oh, look up Vermont, South Dakota, Quebec, Ontario, Virginia, New York, Maryland, North Carolina and there is probably a few others I am forgetting that have them as listed with special status.

Just because they are not listed, it does not means they are not in danger. It just means either they don't recognize it, or they just don't care.

Edit: I know you live in Kansas, but maybe it's because your F&W have not really focused on them yet?

Our F&W would have noticed.

But since it is not illegal then there is no problem with it.

And we only took 4 of the 20 or so we found.

So there would be little impact.

Same thing happen with fish; that is what happened to some of the game fish populations they say: if everyone took home one fish they caught, then they would disappear.

And for the F&W not noticing, our local F&W didn't notice the decline in Bullsnake population for about two decades awhile and recently they are trying to move it from non-license (meaning you can keep them) to non-game (making keeping them illegal).

Edit:
Not to mention a lot of people do eat them, and a lot of fishermen consider Softshells to be a pest, so they go out of their way to destroy them. It is how we lost our wild Common Snapping Turtle population in some areas in Canada because they were unregulated.

Sure YOU may only take 4 out of 20, but what about everyone else that is harvesting them at the same time taking only two or five? Oh yeah, it compound quite quickly right?
