Upyuns selection is nice though you might lose the occassional tetra to the ctenopoma as it gets to adult size.

Really? Congos get 4" and Leopard Ctenopomas get to 6" max...would they still eat them? That's the first I've heard of that. If that's really true could try a smaller Ctenopoma (I think ocellatus is one...) then

You could also put in an African Knife or possibly a mormyrid like a baby whale.

It is more body shape than length, the ctenopomas are ambush feeders with deep bodies and big mouths, the congos are narrower and a 4" congo is a large one, most are a bit smaller. Even a 4" one will only mass about a 1/4 or less of what a 6" ctenopoma does, it won't happen often but given the chance the ctenopoma will eat fish the size of congos.
