When wood is collected from sea water I would use the same treatment as described above with one single change... do not add salt to the water when you soak/boil it...

You will get trace amounts of salt in your freshwater tank, but trace amounts is fine. Many hobbyists add salt to their freshwater to treat or protect from illness.

If you are exceptionally concerend about geting too much salt in the water you can buy a salinity gauge (hydrometer) to monitor the salinity / salt levels in your tank. If you feel they are to high, simply do a water change to decrease them.

I highly prefer 'driftwood' collected from sea water...

Thanks nutcase. kinda assumed it wouldn't need the salt water bath! I've put salt in before to help with cuts on fish so that shouldn't be a problem, next trip to the beach will be fun!

i saw an awesome root structure but i would need a chain saw to seperate it from the rest of the tree!!!!!!

If you really want that piece, i have a husky 359 you can borrow.

ha thx man but its too big for my tank, would go well in yours though :)

How do u boil large pieces? Like to big for any pot etc..

Find a big galvenized stock tank as Plastic might warp. Or a very clean 55g drum.

The drum you can actually build a fire around and heat the water that way and add your drift.

For the stock tank just repeatedly pour boiling water into it and let soak.

Nice find, shame i'm not closer...........

Don't want to derail, but there's a beach near me with quite a lot of sea drift wood on and i've been eyeing it up for use in a tropical fresh water pond but not grabbed any because unsure if salty drift wood would be ok for this application. Does the same advice apply? would it be ok?
hehe for once im close enough to go grab some. I can move my driftwood I got into various tanks from their soaking kiddie pool I setup. :headbang2:headbang2 Then start soaking the new stuff:grinno:

Getting anything in and out of that tank is such an ordeal. Let me know if you change your mind, we can find a way to make it fit. I'll go down with you... any excuse to run the saw :D
