I guess it's just not meant to be. My first fire eel was 16" and he moved a 5lb weight that was on the lid and escaped. My second fire eel which is only 9" decided to try and swim up the outlet of my FX5.... I came home to this today.
Dang...sorry to hear about that...I just got a 6" fire eel a week ago and I'd be pissed if I lost him...much less 2 that are larger! Sorry man, don't give up!
my 10 inch fire eel got sucked up by a very large clown knife, like a worm, but I was there and watched it and caught the clown knife with rubber tip tongs and gave a gentle squeeze and he popped right back out and so far so good.
My first one went into overflow down into filter sock then jumped?? Not sure how. Out of sock into sump. Later to get caught in a cluster of rocks to die. I am kinda like you either I need to buy a really large one but more likely I'll call it done for fire eels. They want to explore the wet and dry world far too much.

Change the outflow to a 1" PVC pipe with a 1/4" hole drilled every 1/2" along the length of the pipe (at least a footlong) and cap the end. No way to get in the outflow that way.
