I give up on Fire eels..

What oddball suggests.. this is why I swear by HOB's with my spineys... at least until they are to big to fit into an outflow. sassy buggers! I keep the tank level low enough they can't jump into the HOB .. after a few weeks Ive never had an issue then raising the water level back up. Sorry for your loss... I think everyone who keeps Spiney's has hit that wall at one time or another with these crazy fish. And anyone who hasn't had issues with these fish is either Lying.. or has a horseshoe stuck somewhere... or maybe Oddball... lol ;) Hopefully shareing these trials will help others not make the same mistakes we've made.

Just take the twin output off so the output is one tube. Flow is crazy, let's see him get in that!

Mines also right on the water line, so technically its not submerged and aids in serious agitation!

My 16" one that I lost would hide in my AC110. So my goal was to completely due away with HOB filters. I was planning on a built in overflow tank but I got a deal on this tank instead. Maybe one day when I have a tank with overflows I'll try it again.

I feel your frustration.. my new lil' fire. this guy is tiny... is about 5"? and has managed to get into my HOB now with the water level dropped almost 2" from the bottom of the return waterfall... and I found him again in the back of my filter! How he physically gets up and into the thing is beyond me. ( and the intake tube is covered by a pre-filter sponge!) This lil' bugger has the record in our house. BUt of course since i went and said what I did about just dropping the water level... I swear these fish are jinxed!

That doesn't sound very promising for you. An escape artist at 5"
