You will never catch me helping new fishkeepers again. There is no point in wasting my time if they are not going to listen. I made the mistake of trying reddit again, found this one person asking for advice on stocking a 75, I suggested a colony of EITHER one species of amatitlania or one species of thorichthys as I usually do, and a couple of smaller fish to go with either. They decide to go with this, and I answer more of their questions. I check back today... They got the convict... One convict... And one firemouth... And tiger barbs, a random mbuna, a peacock, and a like 6" sun cat. Why do I even bother?

My personal favorite is the dudes who want to grow out a rtc in a goldfish bowl but have plans for upgrading within a year, but they basically need you to set it up for them because theyre deathly allergic to google searches and common sense. I left the FB groups and subreddits, they dont want to be responsible pet owners and nothing you say can change that, they see the youtube vids and think its easy, just add water and youre a fishkeeper. 🥳

I’ve seen YouTube videos of popular YouTubers putting (gold) fish in their bathtubs because they “forgot” to buy a tank and don’t even dechlorinate

Don’t let it get you down, the occasional person listens to advice, not just in fishkeeping but in every part of life. You might have helped more than you think.

Don't let this ruin it for you man. This is just a braindead dude who doesn't think straight. There's no better feeling in this hobby than helping a new fishkeeper have success.

True, but I've only ever had one success in helping someone set up a tank. Friend I met during college orientation. Just so happened he was also into fish and wanted to set up his first tank. I send him an Amazon list of the usual stuff I buy (the cheap and good stuff), and I'm pleasantly surprised when he sends me a picture of his tank with all of the equipment I told him to get on/in it. He is now up to 5 tanks, most with fish, plants, and equipment I recommended.

But he was one in dozens I have tried to help, dozens who unlike him refused to listen. At the very least, while unfortunately at the expense of the fish, they usually learn the hard way why they should've listened to me.
