I bought 3 new texas cichlids for a breeding project...
I plan an buying 3 more from a different store....

The first three are beautiful BUT ......

The side fins appear to point down instead of straight out or up.
could this be from over crowded as young or deformity from stock breeding ?

They look like they have a lump before their tails also ?

Is this normal and maybe they will out grow ?
I am curious if you guys see this in your fish or stores?

I have pictures to show what I mean....

Tell me what you think ?

Thanks

Looks like they just have "clamped" fins. Not a big deal. Will get better with good WQ....

The knot on it's tail fin might be from a past injury.

i actually have a texas thats about 4.5inches now and his side fins have been pointed downward just like the ones in the photos above. he has been like that since i got him two months ago. i have seen a bunch of other texas cichlids with the same fins also. the knot is probably from a past injury

I hope so.....This tank is going through a nitrate spike.
I have been changing water every other day !
3 x W/C this week and still high nitrates :nilly:
I will have to fight back chemically ;)

I don't see an injury but you never know.

I really don't think the side fins will ever be right.:(

I hope they out grow the tail thing....

Thanks All :headbang2

The tail thing definitely looks from past injury, I don't think that it will ever fully heal. It may get smaller, but it will probably never heal.
I can't really tell what's wrong with the fins from the pics. Dorsal is just a little clamped due to some sort of stress, but the sides fins are a little hard to tell from the pics.

I do not believe the tail formation is due to injury, they were born like that. It goes hand in hand with the pectoral fin shape.

I have about 10 convict/sajica that I grew from a spawn in my community tank. Two or three have the exact same fin deformities. I do not believe it will improve with water quality either, as these fish have had 50% water changes every week since they hatched, if they needed it or not. Nitrates never climbed over 15-20ppm in the tanks they were/are in.

The rays in the fins look bent when you look at them closely.

This is more along the lines I was thinking.
Deformities from hatch/birth.:(

I think I need better breeding stock.:irked:

Beautiful Texas Cichlids anyways.....

I think I will give them away and look for better.

The Firemouths are looking great......:D

It's a deformity. I've seen it in convicts as well.

If you're serious about a cyano "breeding project" why not do it right and get some wild ones from Texas? A breeding project from inbred stock that you don't know the geneology on doesn't make much sense to me.

Agree......Who ,Where ?

I live in Ohio :(

Don't get good breeding anything at my stores.
I would have to travel far or ship,= both are not cheap.
I am not rich....:nilly:

These are good learning fish.(My thinking)
Build my faith in my water keeping skills :D
