Here's a comparative picture but of a longnose gar:

Notice the lateral line, roundish head, long snout, and rear ended fins.

you can tell that Dan's fish doesn't have an adipose fin because the dorsal fin is so far back.

on a Boulengerella lateristriga, the dorsal fin is not as far set and the head shape is very different and the general proportion of the body is just wrong.

As Ming said, if there's no adipose fin, it's not a Boulengerella. Characins have adipose fins.
