so i am a beginner with my fish keeping but i am doing very well and learning fast.

i wanted to know the proper names for the types of filters there are.

what is the one that just hangs on your tank called?

and the one that acts like the one that hangs on your tank but has the tubed go down to the filter? (fluval makes em)

and i wanted to know waht is your opinions on wich i should use when upgrade to 150-200 gallons, right now i got a 55 gallon tanks with a 60-70 gallon filter that hangs on the top.

thanks!!!:)

Hang on the back (HOB) do exactly that. Canisters sit underneath with the tubes going to them. Sumps/wet drys are underneath also and consist of bio media underneath a drip tray and a return pump. Anything over 200 I say wet dry...

yeah what he said lol.. for a 200+ i would use a sump or wet dry and maybe a fx5 or two ;)

The kind of filter you should get when you upgrade depend on your budget and what kind of system you have. Is it fish only, reef tank, planted tank? For cheap and easy Hang on the back power filter is good. For more option and efficiency I recommend setting up a Sumps type but that will require you to do more work on the setup and $$

i got a 55 with 2 oscars, a silver arowana, a green severum, a jack dempsey, they are all about 3 inches but i am already saving for the upgrade haha.

:WHOA:damn that thing is a beast!

so you would suggest a sump or wet dry and 2 fx5's?

that seems like a lot, also i had one more ? for you

can i have a sand bottom with any kinda filter? or is there like a special filter for sand bottom freshwater tanks?
