Z-trip isnt calling anyone a retard

He said "RETART".
You can see from his posts that he is a poor speller. What he meant to type was "RETORT". A retort is a stand used to hold up glass-ware used in chemistry experiments. This is probably his way of calling someone a 'stand up guy' willing to bolster the scientific curiosity of young minds!
He was paying a compliment. If you feel insulted by another poster, just consider the source and move along from there.

Peace out

WOW thread de-rail!

Apparently, they are very fast and aggressive eaters, I have a false map and a painted myself. Just becareful if you get a "friend" for the turtle that it is ether the same speices or the aggression is simular. I find it funny to watch my guys, I have them cycleing my 110 as we speak!

Ok first of all no one should be calling anyone a retard! I own 5 turtles. They are all happy and loving life and they come when I call them and at least one definitely knows his name. they are...oh heck I've had em for years. the best way with any animal is not by going by the standards NECESSARILY (some standards are good) but some standards and care sheets can be well .... substandard. Go on line go to i think its the world chelonian trust. Here you can research their natural environment. Imitate their natural environment as much as possible and you will have success and a happy turtle.
UVB light is essential to shell health. Reptomin is an awesome food formulated for the common red ear and will give your turt everything he needs, and a good long life. That being said don't bore the poor thing to death. Yup take it to a human level here... you would be bored to death eating the same food night and day. My turts also like frozen and then defrosted krill. If you feed feeder fish try to stay away from the pond comet type they are high in fat. the Rosie reds (little minnow type fish) work great. Gives em something to chase down. I usually dont feed live food to my turtles however because those little fish tend to be loaded with diseases and in that case its better to bore them to death with reptimin. Silversides are great but are more of a treat thing very oily. One thing that people dont talk about is water. Turtles need cleanish water I say clean-ish because now that you have a turtle in the tank you will never have clean water again. Get the largest filter you can possibly find and then next year get a second one! Turtles kept in dirty water often suffer respiratory infections and turtles are slow to respond to antibiotics. Saving a turtle sick with resp inf. is hard. If you ever hear a cough you need to get him to the vet 5 minutes ago. no joking. make sure you use a fish tank heater in your water you want your water at about 85 degrees. and a nice basking spot too.
By the way I take my turtle out of the water and he doesn't stress out. He doesn't pull in his head and he doesn't flip out. In fact I bring him to the vet in a critter carrier out of water. This is because I spend time with my turtles and they are used to me. When the vet picks him up to examine him he immediately pees all over the vet, which is a stress response. He doesn't know the vet and this stresses him out. He will even hiss at the vet, but as soon as I tell him "Cut it out cooter" in a low voice that he recognizes he responds by not peeing anymore and he stops hissing. Is every turtle this smart. Hell i don't know. but the point I'm making is don't believe everything you hear. My turtle is used to me and he clearly is not stressed when out of the water. Another individual perhaps may be. but if you spend time with yours he or she will also get used to you.
If the claws get a bit freddie kruger on you you have a boy by the way and by all means get one of the opposite sex. i don't believe in forced celibacy and they just seem happier all stacked on top of each other under the heat lamp. they love that...good luck

Thanks tessigal. That was very informational.

Oh by the way buying a pet because its "cute" always comes under fire, but the reality is that humans usually choose their lifelong mate because of physical attraction including the "oh he's/she's soooo cute!" thing.
Yup ok so when I go to the pet store I always seek out the ugliest animal I can find to bring home...yeah right...and you end up with a home filled with the ugliest creatures that God placed on the Earth. Yeah ok ....reality check time....
The top reasons that any human buys a pet are likely:
its cute
its beautiful
its majestic
Thats not to say that there aren't other good reasons that some people buy pets. Some like pets because they are one of a kind. Hey what ever floats your boat.
The mere fact that you think this turtle is the cutest thing ever (and you probably do) means that you will likely spend time with your new pet and dote on it and give it everything he or she needs, including spending a good amount of time observing his normal behavior which will help you identify any illnesses that may occur.
I say let the person who has never made an impulse purchase be the first one to throw stones. Yup I've had an occasional impulse buy as well.
Oh btw i keep 2 florida cooters (herbivorous), 2 ouchita maps (carnivores), and one yellow bellied slider (yellow ear slider)(omnivore), together and they all get along great. The only thing was that my first turtle was quite a lot bigger than the rest so I waited till they were more alike in size before putting them together.
Oh yeah and Im making a great enclosure for my turts complete with plants (check them out for toxicity first) and waterfall and sump system in my kitchen. Go bananas with their enclosure. Turtles are one of those pets, like the poison arrow frogs that you can make a breath- taking living space for. Mine will live in my kitchen.
This will no doubt draw many complaints and shouts, but your vet can test your turtles for Salmonella and mine are all negative for it. If they have it they can be treated too. Salmonella won't harm a turtle, but it could prove a health hazard to you and your family, so just be sure to wash ( I used to keep a small bottle of Purell near the tank for immediate use after handling a turt (make sure it isn't in danger of falling in the tank though))after touching them or their water until you can have them tested, and be careful about feeding, you don't want to infect your turtle with salmonella by feeding raw hamburger or even salad that is too old for human consumption. Again I sing the praises of Reptimin...the nutritional values are printed right on the can, therefore you know whats going into your turtle. Compare this for instance with feeder fish that most pet stores don't even bother to feed because they sell so fast, plus you have no idea what food the fish have been fed if they are in fact fed. This is exactly why we decided to breed our own rats and mice for our snakes. In this way we know exactly what is going into our snakes as food, because we know how we have fed our rats and mice. Good nutrition is so important no matter what animal you are talking about.
I highly recommend that you go absolutely bananas with the enclosure. Be creative and have fun. I am using a thick rubbermaid horse trough for mine you can get them at a local grain store if you live in the country or suburbs, if in the city you might have to travel for one. Think about it....green plants, the UVA/UVB lighting that is good for the plants too, a little indoor garden a waterfall, the soft trickle of the water as in a Japanese garden, how relaxing is that!!! Again good luck! and enjoy!
