I have a 350 gallon pond/tank setup in my back yard with a jag, five star general, 2 rds, jd, and 2 gouramis, and a little baby turtle. its been setup for a bout 2 months now and has been alot of fun to watch.
However, this morning i went to feed them and it appears that my jag has layed eggs on one of the rocks. now i know nothing about breeeding fish and have never had a fish lay eggs so i am a complete noob at this. my first question is: just because she layed eggs, does that mean she has a mate? the 5 star general seems to be hanging with her and helping protect the eggs but they are also together alot without the eggs so idk if its just the same they used to do. so i guess for the first post i will show a picture of the eggs and i need to know if you think they will develope or not.
Sorry for the pics being flipped all around but i was using my phone. In the second pic i believe you can see the jag and the 5 star near the eggs and the first is of just the eggs

just give it a few days . the fish will eat the eggs if their not fertile .
the only way you can tell is if they hatch, then you will want to move
the fry to a safe place like a breeder net or another tank .
you will want to put a sponge on the intake tube of the filter so
they dont get sucked up. i have fish that lay eggs once a month
but never hatch. i wish you well :)

It could be that your jag and general have paired off but this does not necessarily mean that the eggs are fertile. If they are, then you will have hybrids.

does the fact that they are both defending the eggs give any indication that they are fertile or not? if they do hatch how long will they fend off the other fish in the pond before they are all eaten if they hatch while i am at work or during the night

also, could i move the rock into a smaller tank with just the rock and eggs incase they are fertile?

When both are defending the eggs together, it means that they have paired off. However, since both parents are of different species, there is a big chance that the eggs may be infertile. If they do hatch, the parents will protect them until the fry are free swimming. After that, it's a free-for-all.
Yes, you can move the rock with the eggs to another tank. Place the rock with the eggs in a vertically slanting position and put a mild stream of air below the eggs. In 2 days time, you will see if the eggs are fertile if they don't turn white with fungus. Good luck.

well i got home from the gf house tonite and everylast one of the eggs was gone. the rock was wiped clean of eggs. im pretty bummed out and not sure wat happened
