Well my large spot paratilapia did it again . Looks like around 100 eggs and its on day 2 !!! I hope nothing eats them. How long does it take for them to hatch ? The tanks water change is due and im afraid to mess around with the tank. Let alone walk near it ..

Congrats and good luck! Here's the article on reproductive biology from Cichlid Room Companion;

Paratilapia polleni Bleeker 1868, A Threatened Cichlid From Madagascar

After seeing the female start to eat the eggs and some other fish hovering I got nervous and moved what was left in a established 20 gallon. However I turned of the pump because it was quite overpowering and threw a large airstone in . I looked in the small tank today and saw some very tiny wrigglers !! I hope they survive. What do they flourish on ? I have spirulina flakes . If those don't work I will have to go pick something else up . How soon should I be throwing food in there ? I read the article it was very good and gave me some helpful information . Thank you.

You're welcome. This is wonderful! Congratulations :)
I've only cared for Ptychochromis sp. 'tarantsy' spawn. Im sure a few other members will chime in that have raised Paratilapia.

Here's the first thread about the spawn. There's a bunch in this section of the forum on their progress. Take a look at my other posts on them. You've got at least a day or so before they're hopping around. If paratilapia are the same developmentally, they will gain nutrients from their egg sac. I don't think they need to eat until its dissolved. When they were able to eat, their first food was newly hatched baby brine shrimp, from a makeshift hatchery in my kitchen.

I kept the temp in the low 80s with no tank lights. Just light from the room.

Good luck! Please post pics

Great experience to raise tiny fry! Paratilapia are a bit easier than Paretroplus to raise. You have to wait to feed till the fish are free swimming- usually 8 days from the time of the spawn. If you gave green water (rotifers, etc) you'll do great otherwise, raising brine shrimp is easy- I decapsulate the eggs in chlorine and a pinch of sodium hydroxide. Rinse well and add to a bubbler with a tablespoon of salt per 2 lts. The fry grow fast and can eat crush flake about 4 weeks after.
Good luck
Btw temperature is not as critical, Paratilapia tolerate cooler weather, I am raiding fry in a room were the temps dip into the 60's and no heater added.

thanks . I am a little nervous . If they do survive and get a little bigger I will take pics . Right now I can barely see them . But they are there !!

Doing good so far . I was only able to save around 20 fry. They are just starting the free swimming stage. I am heading off to the store to grab some brine shrimp eggs . Hopefully it goes well so I can get a few more next time around !

I have 11 or so fry . That I can count . They are eating well with the brine shrimp . I will take pictures as soon as they get a little larger . My camera will not pick them up they are so tiny !!

Glad to hear your news! Looking forward to pics when they're big enough. Fry are a great reason to buy a macro lens, or at least that's how we rationalized it ;)
