Ok, I got into some trouble at the LFS (which will probably appeal to you fellow MFKs.) I was researching a fish they labelled as a Convict Cichlid, thinking it should be okay with my Keyhole Cichlid and two plecos and the picture looked similair on the internet. Well, I traded a few mollies and such for the bad boy today, got him for £3, only I think he aint a Convict

It's a Venustus :WHOA:
Anyhow, he's sharing a 25 gal with Keyhole (2") and two Plecos (2-3"), and is himself a 4". From what i've been reading they grow HUGE! Anyhow, is there a problem keeping Central American and this African beast together, aslong as there is enough room? They're getting along well, and swim together, sort of like a pair. I've set my tank up nice, slate rock stacked against the back wall, and a large piece of driftwood. He's already eating bloodworm and such, and I'm certainly up for looking after this beast :screwy:
Any recommendations on setup type or food other than standard? How long do they take to grow?
Also, although this guys fairly placid at the moment, I'm naming him after a caiman at a pet store I visit for livefoods; AGGRO.

Oh sweet dude, and thanks for the quick reply!
So do you really need 125 gallon for them, or is that for a group or something? This thing will probs be housed alone.
Paul :headbang2
actually thats a 110 and its just one of my growout tanks.. i plan on seperating the SA cichlids from the african soon but this is only one of three mixed tanks that i have so here soon i will have two tanks one with sa one with africans... if ya notice all the other fish that arent labeled are africans except for a few asians that hide all day and come out at night

Ah and both types dont mind? Oh and jsut out of interest, Malawi bloat, which i just read about, it can't spread to Americans can it? No signs of anything like that, I was just wondering.
Very nice.
Paul

bloat affects any fish, you may want to stick that venustus into another tank soon, as it may not reach full size it is still an aggressive cichlid and might trash anything else for some food

Yeah, I've got six weeks off (Summer Holidays) and so I'll be keeping an eye on this guy. My Keyhole gets aggressive aswell, or it did once with the male molly. Molly rammed him and Keyhole rammed him back only about 10x as powerful into a horseshoe shape. I thought the molly was dead, but then he swam off
Anyhow, they seem to be getting on fine, and theres no feeding aggression either, but i'll watch out.
So is this bloat thing contageous?
Paul
