i got meal worm bugs now what?!....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You could use that. Personally, I'm just going to peel a potato, cut it into quarters, and let them feed on it themselves. I'll buy a big piece of filter cotton and put it in a small tray of water, and let it completely absorb as a water source for the meal worms, both in larval and beetle stage.

Oh yah, and this tank is outdoors, so it wont bother us that much :)

thanks for the info moo..is water play a vital role in the survival of the beetles? aand have you succesfully bred meal/super worms before?:)

heres some pics lupin of the beetles and one in the cocoon stage..

I haven't bred them, my brother has, and I looked on. He had a successful colony for a while, but they all died after he couldn't be bothered taking care of them.

And yes, the female is generally the larger one.

I kept some for about a year. I kept them in a 10 gallon with oats as substrate and kept a cut up apple in there as well. They multiply very fast and eventually took over 2 tanks. I let my sister use them for fishing bait to manage the numbers after that.

did you segregate the beetles from the worms at first?

At first I just left them all in the same tank. When I split them into 2 tanks I just transfered the beetles but they were fine all being in the same tank.

woah woah woah. excuse me that was wrong I meant superworms are bigger than meal worms. MY bad

Interesting .... Ive never seen a larvae like the one shown in your photo. The ones in Australia are yellow, longer, thinner and more worm looking. I did a quick search and there appears to be at least 2 species ..... Is the yellow worm similar to your superworm? Keeping and feeding them seem to be similar. Our yellow ones do fly as beetles.
