same here , my apistos breed in hard water and in 7.5 plus ph but they breed more often and have better colors in soft 6.5 water
 
funny how you mentioned better colors. better colors to us, not necessarily indication a better life or health of the fish. just like if you're sunburned or have jaundice from liver failure, does not mean that you're healthy or happy :) but often times it does indicate health in animals with good colors, but just wanted to be an antagonist.
