no pics. It seems hard to find umbees in cali, or maybe I'm not looking hard enough. I found a pair on craigslist and asked for some pics. he's charging $200. That seems like too much, plus I don't really want to dump all my fish for a pair of umbees and I can't keep them together

Nothing is too much for umbies! They are crazy rare. I'd buy for sure. You can keep them together by putting a divider in the tank with a hole cut in it so only the female can fit through. This way when the male gets PO-ed the female has a little part of the tank where she's safe. Also, don't put the divider right in the middle or the male won't have much space.

Well my arm has been twisted enough. I'm getting em! that is if the guy has'nt sold them yet. I will have to do some relocating of festaes, carpntis and cubans! Unless you guys think they all can coexist in a 168 gallon.

I agree..
For a fish you're paying 200.00, and for its that hard to find another male if it were to get killed, I would keep it seperate..

Thanks for the recomendations guys but less than 24 hours after being posted, the pair was sold. I do have an extra 70 gallon set up for crazy impulse buys and I think I will try for umbees. I heard males are hard to come by, How much fry would you buy to almost ensure one male with this species?

Honestly as many as you have room to raise seperatly. Rapps fry are supposed to have unusually low odds of finding a male for whatever reason. So I would look for fry that aren't from the rapps supply chain. And only buy as many as you have room for. Because in groups they can usually not get along.

Thats exactly what i am doing I currently have them all in a 55. Then once they get a little bigger ill be setting up my 180 with dividers to keep 3 in and then one in the 55 by themselves. But before i set up the 180 im putting a drip system on it cause im getting tired of water changes(check my sig)but i want to maintain the best quality water i can for my fish.

how big are the festae n stuff in that tank..i'd say you could keep them together a fair while and decide on what you want to keep when they need there own room.

Tank 168 gallon with 5 festae, 5 cubans and 5 carpintis. I think they will go in the 70 gallon by them selves. I don't intend to keep all these fish, just wanted to find a pair and sell remaining three out of five of each species.
