so iv havent used drift wood in a tank before but was thinking about taking out the castle in the gold fish tank and replacing it with drift wood and java ferns.

so i heard that it can cloud your water and to prevent this i just have to boil it.

True or not? has this worked for any one? or do i not need to worry about foggy water?

Nice avatar. Good move, lose the castle and go for driftwood. The color will start to clear after a few water changes.

I've had a piece of driftwood in a tank for almost a year now, and it's finally clearing up, of course it's too big to boil, and the fish love it, especially the pleco :)

I have never boiled and I have 3 nice sized pieces in my tank and never had a problem with the tannins. IMO, its the purigen that does it for me, which explains why it needs to be changed every week.

never a bad idea to boil the stuff if it's small enough to. or you could soak it in salty water to draw a lot of the tannins and impurities out. just make sure u soak it in normal water afterwards to get as much of the salt out as u can. good luck

Tannons are not bad for you fish anyway, but they do make the water discoloured with a redy tinge. But waterchanges will remove any tannons but it could take weeks or months to remove all the tannons depending on water volumn and the size of the driftwood.
If you go to a local river and grab a piece out of there the tannons should already be gone but you'll need to soak it in salt water for a while just incase of disease.

i have lots of drift wood in my tank, i just rinse it and put it in, i like the "clouded" water, you can still see all the fish perfectly, but it gives it a cool effect and has no ill effects on the fish, it makes the water and all the plants have a "spooky" effect at night when the Ghost knife and Catfish are out, :)

depending on the wood to water ratio, it can take a long time to clear, up to months and years. I personally like the tannings look also.
