lots of people get a piece of wood for their tank and are in a hurry to put it in.. ..guess what! ..they float.. so you either weigh it down, or put it in a big tub in your backyard and change the water every day.. in 2 weeks you'll have a log that's soaked enough water in to sink and no tannins in your tank.

Plan a camping trip with your boyfriend to the Boundry Waters Canoe Area. There is tons of cool wood there that is already water logged and low in tannins. I haven't had any discoloration from my wood that I got from there.
Something cool that I have been thinking about doing the next time I am up your way is to raid some of the beaver dams. I brought back some pieces of wood from one of the dams. I like the look of the way beavers chew it to a point. I think it would look good in a tank in a tangled mess.

I agree.. if you get wood that's already been in the water you won't have to worry about tannins. ..parasites and bugs and stuff maybe, but no tannins.
