I guess he didn't like my offer...

I think a lot of you are over reacting. The $200 was an offer to start negotiations and I only offered it after having seen the aquarium on Craigslist for a couple days. If no one else is buying it, then is a low ball really a bad idea? I would disagree.

I’ll post the reply again edited to cover up the language when I get home.

I get that, but your response will likely keep him from considering you even if he is willing to take less.

As a rule of thumb personally, I won’t offer less then asking if the ad has been up for less then a month/two months.

A view of oneself, which is incorrect in astronomical proportions with respect to self esteem, has been, is, and will have been the cornerstone failure and the downfall of every man (myself included) and of the humankind as a whole.
Well put! And so eloquently too!

Dang now i really want to see what the response was.

Personally, i wouldve countered your offer with 480.

I've hidden the foul language, here was the response:

Personally I don’t see an issue with telling a guy sending a low ball offer to take a hike. $200/$500 isn’t that bad of an offer though I may add. I usually offer 1/2 selling price to start unless it’s a great deal as is. $500 220 isn’t a great deal though.

I can tell you I’ve told plenty of people to take a hike when selling. I did it just recently. Someone offered $100 for most of my corals (some of which are $300+ each, higher end pieces easy $4000 in coral) and I told him to f*** off. Guess who was at my house last night buying my lighting system off of me for $2000, that same guy. As he was there the person picking up the livestock showed up as well, handed me $2000 in front of him, not one complaint or renegotiation. The guy buying the livestock hung around for a bit, had a beer, very nice guy. The other guy left as quick as he could. The guy who bought the lights only messaged me through email thinking I wouldn’t remember him as we previously spoke through text. He wouldn’t text me as he claimed his phone was broken yet the emails said “sent from android device”. I personally don’t hold grudges so after he left I sent him a message to his phone saying enjoy the lights just so he knows I recognized who it was. He replied “thanks”.

When I’m selling a new 500 gallon acrylic aquarium and some guy on kijiji offers $500 as its $1/gallon lol. Yeah it irritates you sometimes. Normally I just reply with no thank you but some days you get sick of it. The worst is when you reply with a no thank you and the potential buyer gets offended and says how what you are selling isn’t worth s***.

I have this one guy, messages me almost every 3/4 months saying he’s finally ready to buy a new tank. I quote him 200 different sizes then he says “I think I’ll wait till you find me a used one.” Very annoying. Pics below.

I can’t see the initial reply so not sure how bad it was but I’d be fairly confident I’ve said worse.

Here is the guy I mentioned who messages me almost every 3 months. Look at the dates in the screenshots. I am green typing.

It started in 2016. In 2017 I told him I no longer am interested in his business. In 2019 he still messages me every 3 months. As you can see, I quote him a brand new 500 gallon tank with drill holes and overflow included and its to much yet he’s always ready to make deposit. First pic is the most recent. From Saturday, I quoted him 4 different tanks. 2nd pic shows Sunday message and from 2018 quote on 6x4x2 acrylic new. 3rd pic very similar, asking for tank quote saying he can make deposit. Feb 2018. Aug 2017 asks me again. I told him to read previous conversation. Last two pics previous conversation. Now to give you all perspective, I deal with these type of conversations almost daily being in the selling new/used tanks business. I’ve offered this individual everything from an $800 300 gallon, $1000 700 gallon to a brand new $2500 480 gallon. He’s always ready to make a deposit and always asks for th biggest tank possible. In the end I know he will never buy one. I have not blocked the number yet, honestly, just for when threads like this pop up. So you should all know that you don’t have any reason to complain...

At this point it could almost borderline harassment.

That is worse then I thought it would be. Ok, maybe your reply was kind in comparison. Lol
Hahaaa pretty clever reply honestly. Couple good lines in there. Not actually that mean of a reply. Looks like it took more out of the day from the person who read it then the person who wrote it. He writes in my opinion a pretty clever reply, sends it, enjoys the rest of his day. Person who low balled reads it, gets upset about it. I can tell you he will forget about your $200 offer within an hour, but I’m sure you will remember that reply for a while.

B BichirKing has the right idea for lowballing someone. It's all in the approach. In the words of Winston Churchill, “tact is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.”

He may have eventually taken the $200, but not how it was offered.

I would have stopped replying to that nut a long time ago....everytime he sends something I'd simply delete it.
