I'm sitting on my couch today when I look over at my fish tank and what do I see?

Oh, my god I just saw my yellow lab spawn with one of my female Kyoga Flamebacks.

She is now holding. WTH!!! Now, I knew you had to watch it with peacocks, other mbuna and well you get the idea but these fish are from 2 totally different lakes and look nothing alike. Ok, here is my question...I am taking more fish in to the LFS to trade tomorrow. (Still trying to get my tank totally changed over) I was actually going to keep my yellow lab because he is a very pretty one, but I won't if he is going to breed my "more rare" flamebacks. If I got him his own females would that fix the problem or do I need to get rid of him? Please help.

Yep, that happens all the time. You just can't trust African cichlids. :D Even though they are from different lakes, they can still hybridize. No matter what, if you got the lab some females, he will still breed with the kyoga flameback females. The only way to stop the hybridizing, is to either separate the lab into a different tank or get rid of him. :)

By the way, any of your kyoga flamebacks produce viable fry?

Well, then the lab will go.

No fry. My original holdong female died...Then I had another holding but she must have swallowed or spit them because she is not golding anymore. Right now the only holding one is holding Kyoga/yellow lab eggs...WTF!!!

My male Kyoga is acting a little weird. I am kinda worried. He is just hanging in one spot. I don't know if it because the lab is maybe being more dominent since breeding or what. He is still colored up though...Any ideas?

Get rid of the lab and your problems will be solved. ;) Kyoga flamebacks are easily bullied and won't breed unless dominant. If the aggressor is the lab from your observations, then get rid of him.

I agree with Tydus on this one. Sad to say it cause I love labs!

I will get rd of the lab tomorrow. I do like him but I'mnot going to have that. so....

That's good to hear bro. Or you can just sell me your kyoga flamebacks. :D:naughty::D:naughty:

Another strategy to save your fry is to strip your females after a couple days holding. That will save your fry for sure. That's what I do and I get fry all the time. :) My brother made two egg tumblers out of scratch and they work just as good :D. I just think that you should really do that and get an egg tumbler as a back up plan since you never know what's going to happen.
