I've always hated apple eventho I'm currently a graphic design student. Everytime I use a mac I feel dirty and then I come home and have to look my laptop in the eye, and it's like my laptop knows....

you should have backed it up on to your pc as has been mentioned. dont hate apple for charging you for their help because you forgot to back it up on a pc. thats not their fault, responsibility rests solely on your shoulders.
it would be good if they at least credit you for some of it as good customer care as it is a glitch in their product but ultimately its your fault you lost the data permanently.
everything fails at some point, that is why i have a back up of my back up.

I've had ipods since they came out and I'm currently rocking an itouch. Never had a single problem with the equipment or using itunes.

I don't know why you would have to re-buy the songs you bought. Apple will recognize from your account when you attempt to dl it again and not charge you. I have done this many times and was never charged.

You should always remember that they don't necessary make electronics to last forever. MP Players are one of the top electronics that they make money on and it's not just apple. So remember that when you purchase any electronics. As for your situation, I suggest what everyone else has and back it up because it's a heck of alot easier to reload again. And if you have to buy new, then you still have your music stashed away.
