So I have been on this quest to find newts in my area and it has brought me to many different kinds of pet stores in the past week. The other day I was in a big name pet shop and the people that work there obviously don't care about animals. I saw a couple things that irked me but the biggest was that the store had a big huge bowfront showtank that was the focal point on the fish department. I came very close to reaching my hand in the tank myself : there was an oscar that not only had horrible open wounds from scraping things in the tank, but he had a 6 inch fish stick out of his mouth ( i couldn't tell what kind of fish, but from the tail end sticking out, i can give a pretty good guess of how big it was) The thing was swimming around with this fish hanging out of its mouth. I wanted to tell someone but I had my son with me and he was throwing a temper tantrum so I had to leave. Since I couldn't even find anyone that I could tell, I just left being very angry that I had to leave seeing that. You would think the showtank would get more upkeep. And the fish was starting to decay in the oscars mouth so i know it had been a while! :screwy: open forum to feedback or similar stories. thanks! just had to rant and vent a bit

well that goes for any store, if you find it to be substandard just don't buy stuff from that store even if it is cheaper there

Well, not that I like to stand up for big chain store's fish departments (because I really don't), but when an O eats a fish whole like that the best thing to do is to leave it be. If you try to pull the fish out by the tail it will more then likely be an insta death for the Oscar.

I saw a massive stingray in a 55g tank at a lfs here...i wanted to buy him but he was even to large for my 125...Also they had a HUGE pacu in what appeared to be a 25G....sadddd saddd people

Was your son throwing a tantrum because of the Oscars meal?

Some people "rescue" animals that are impropely kept in stores...

Which motivates stores to improperly keep animals...

If you ever see an improperly kept animal, purchasing only puts profits in the owners pocket while he orders another animal to replace the one you "rescued"...

THINK before you "rescue"...

I know that doesn't really apply to your experience Swede, but is something I strongly feel regarding the topic of poorly kept animals in stores...

And your experience is typical for Corporate America. The suits pay themselves big salaries to sit around and think of ways to maximize "profits" to justify giving themselves raises. One of the first things they've done to increase their salaries is pay pathetic wages to employees. Not many quality employees can accept such low wages long term.

Note: I fully understand there are some good people here who work at Pet Stores and even Corporate Pet stores. I'm not criticizing you, I'm acknowledging you as the minority...

Even if the oscar was in perfect condition, its pretty sad there prime showtank fish is an oscar to begin with.

Typically you expect black tip sharks, rays, or aros.

...and whats wrong with Oscars?I have yet to see or even hear about a store that can properly keep a blacktip in a display.
