I HATE big name pet stores!

well one of the funniest/or saddest thing i've ever seen was at a walmart a few weeks ago, they had a tank full of black snails that were all dead in the spotted puffer tank. had in writing on the top of the tank that snails could not be in a tank with sald, but had a bucket of aquarium salt in the tank.

At the store where I work, we never purposely bring in fish we don't have room for. We do occasionally have people bring in fish that have outgrown their tanks. Buying these really would be rescuing them-we don't bring in other large oscars and other things to replace them. Someone recently brought in a HORRIBLY stunted oscar (I bet he was raised in a 29 or something). If I had room in my 150 for another oscar, I'd love to get him and give him a nice place to spend the rest of his life. I doubt he'll get much bigger than the 7-8" he currently is

i brought this up before on another thread, but petsmart says...
managuense: 20 gallons.
so basically i rescued one of them ha. i never liked chain stores cuz they seem like they dont really know about fish so i go to the lfs's around here. most of them here have been pretty good but sounds like many of u have different experiences. I have noticed that many lfs's have a tank that runs mainly for fish who people brought cuz they were too big or aggressive or whatever. those fish seem to just be beating on each other in that tank and not taken care of as much. they usually arent listed with price either so im guessing they're just give aways. will check next time

lol. went in petsmart the other day and noticed the same thing. managuense for a 20 gallon tank. so i got the only 2 they had, plus they were only $3.

yeah huge i hope, but one is in my 150 and one in my 55 but i'll be getting another 150 soon and they were small, i don't like how some chains care for fish but they do get some oddball fish every now and then that i can't ever find like my synodontis longirostrus was bought from there and he's doing great now.

Well, not that I like to stand up for big chain store's fish departments (because I really don't), but when an O eats a fish whole like that the best thing to do is to leave it be. If you try to pull the fish out by the tail it will more then likely be an insta death for the Oscar.

I agree. Why try to tell someone about an oscar eating a fish? Let it be.

Just remember... if you spend money at a store you are supporting that stores behavior...

If it is a good store with a fish that is in a rough spot... spending money on that fish is supporting that store. Well if the store took the fish from someone who was improperly housing it and made it available to someone willing to properly housing it... well I agree with supporting that stores behavior...

But if the store is lying about a fish's needs to sucker customers into buying it, like most chain stores do... then you are not "rescuing" the fish, you are supporting the corporate mass of lies that (I believe) is the biggest drain America has ever suffered from...

Use the power of your dollar intelligently...
