u need more bio-balls and ceramic rings, also bio-balls works better dry

How does that trap debris?

Only way to remove particulte is through a smaller sieve than the one your using.
Change to a smaller micron rated sock.
Adding powerheads could get the gunk to your lift tube or not.
What they might do is move the bulk of the crud to a couple of spots that are easy to clean up.
I agree, sumps can be a major PIA sometimes, but once you get it all dialed in, they are sweet.

You have no mechanical filtration, your purely aimed at the bio. Filter floss/socks are all well and good but they will clog easily and in a sump if they clog they will overflow with a badly designed sump.

I total re-think is needed, as a temp idea take the sump off line and add a canister if you can get your hands on one. Closed loop, no chance of flooding will only need a clean when flow starts to reduce. Sit back and have a re-consider on the sump.

Would need to be a pretty rubbish design to put water on the ground during clogging. Usually the sock/media holder would just bypass into the rest of the sump should it clog enough.
Can`t have it both ways.
If you want almost all the particulate out, you need a really fine media, which also means you will need to service it more often.
Good news is, when switching to smaller micron filtering you see results quickly.
After running for awhile, the amount of service should settle on a regular schedule.
Canisters are great filters, but a sump can clean a tank just as well.
He already has the sump.
It wouldn`t take that much work to make it more effective at removing the tiny stuff.

Good luck, hope you get it right the 2nd time.
