I bought a 9" Ornate bichir a few weeks back, and I HATE this fish. It's such a trouble maker. What do I do?!

I have a 125 gallon tank.. This is what is in it other than the ornate

1 Jag- 1 RTTSN-3 senegals

I HAD a striped raphael cat in there, but yesterday I noticed that his barbels were missing, and the nubs were getting infected-- I suspected the ornate. So, I moved him to a hospital tank.

I HAD a small 4" common pleco, and the Ornate annihilated him- he had bite marks all over him, and he died from it.

All was fine last night, he ate 2 large silversides, and a piece of market shrimp.. everyone else eats massivore...

I go downstairs and My Jag, who is my baby, has a chuck taken out of it's pectoral fin... it's shaped just like the bichirs mouth...

I don't understand, Everything I have read says it will do fine with larger fish as long as it's fed... :nilly:

you should know that mixing bichirs with others are always risky. Its not just ornate, but other species of bichirs would do the same.
Its best to have bichirs on their own tank, otherwise any tankmates which is fit in bichirs mouth will be on the menu.

My senegals do not eat anything but pellets. They refuse to touch anything else. They do not bother anyone in the tank.

My Jaguar is 10"...

Each fish has it's individual personality. Just because people have success with keeping ornate with other big fishes doesn't meant it'll work 100% all the time. Don't blame the ornate just because it's more aggressive than others. It's not his fault that his brain is hardwired to be more of a predator than a peaceful fish. Take my ornate for example, he doesn't bother any of the other bichirs in the tank even though he is the largest fish in there.

Its the same with humans, just because I like something doesn't mean you like it too.

You could try feeders. At least this give your ornate an easier prey to attack and hopefully leave your bigger fishes alone.

I know it can be hard on you since you wish for your fishes to co-exist together as you like them all. I've been down that road before when I wanted my FH with other fishes but he demolish any of them. In the end, the whole tank belongs to him.

I would stay clear of feeders.

Ornates are 50/50 IME.
I had a 19" female that was an absolute ***** to ANYTHING in the tank.
She died of unknown reasons earlier this year, and was replaced with a new female.
Though only 9" at the moment, she is a very peaceful fish.

So it's one of those things unfortunately.

I said nothing about feeders.. Silversides are not "feeders".

I was referring to the post above mine...

For some reason my internet didn't load the second half of his post the first time I read it.. Yeah, heck no to feeders.

I did throw in some yellow labs once-- He could have cared less.
