I hate rude people, does a 5 inch really cost $200.00 each?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i don't get it.. why bother? if you don't want to pay $200 for a fish that you can get for $60.. don't. it's really that simple.

let some other sucker buy the $200 fish. the best way to get the price down is for NO ONE to buy the fish. if it's too expensive, the market will bear that out. all the arguing over the value of the fish accomplishes absolutely nothing, except giving MFK a bad name.

I would not buy fish from anyone like that. But why the huge price jumps when it comes to Discus? Well more than anything is they eat a lot for a small fish and they won't eat the cheep stuff. I get my discus for $9.00 to $18.00 at 2". When the Discus get to about 5" the same people will buy them back at $25.00 to $65.00. That looks like a good way for me to make some money? NO. So Buy a Discus at $9.00 at 2" that Discus will cost about $2.50 a week to feed and about 5 weeks to grow a inch thats about $15.00 an inch in food. So 9.00 for the 2" fish $45.00 in food to sell it at $25.00 so I'm out $29.00. Note a breeder is not going to spend $2.50 per fish to feed a week, more like $.10 a fish. But someone with just one to five fish most of the time will be. Most people see Discus and fall in love. Then they'll go out get a tank set it up, spend about $140.00 a fish becuse they want good ones. Out of the first batch or two they will loose most of the fish, then in about 4 months they get it down and have a tank of Discus. They show their friends and coworkers and they are happy for about a month or two. Then the tank becomes a lot of work and money to keep up for some fish that never looked as cool as the one they seen in that one place that one time. But they just can't get rid of the tank and fish they unlike other first time fishkeepers, they have allready put way too much money into it just to flush it all away. Most people like this have put out over $5,000 on a frist time tank that they had set up for less than 6 months. Unlike most life time fishkeepers most of wich spent less than $20.00 on their frist set up, fish and all. Well they want their $5,000 back, not going to happen but they are going to try very hard to. And thats why you will see people trying to sell $40.00 fish for over $200.00. Most for this fish are in poor shape at best.

thanks I understand now. my fish eat 4-6 cubes a day,and a 32 count cube package cost 4-7 dollars. so it cost me 16.00 to 28.00 a month to feed my 20 discus(not full grown, I know the 10 gallons for each full grown discus rule) I now can see where that guy was coming from, I didn't think about home much time he had spend feeding them, buying decloranator, test kits, etc. thanks for opening my eyes.

I almost fell asleep reading that because it was so boring... why waste your time if you're not going to buy it? I don't go to a LFS and say "hey mate, why is your arowana 40, 000 dollars and the one down the street is 300!?!?" I'd just go down the street pick up my 300 dollar arowana drive home and be happy. I think there's logic there.
why waste your breath?

yeah I wasn't thinking logic at the time. I also wasn't thinking about home much money he has spend on food, test kits, and decloranator.

thanks everyone.

dont you think it was a SCAM??? no pic's, no working out a price.
you know how many people are just waiting on someone like you to post wanted?? post wanted oscars i bet he has them too for $500 each

sorry, dont think hes being rude. if he is selling for a price you dont agree with, dont buy, and if the price really IS wrong, he wont sell. but its not the buyers job to set the price. if i were you dont want cheaper fish, get them from the breeder you mentioned.
all IMO, of course :D

Yeah it's not just rude, It's so stupid too. If you don't like the price don't buy or ask for a better price, it's that simple. Negotiations conducted on the basis of insulting the integrity of the seller never works.

Well said and I can't agree more. I'll move this to General Aquaria Discussion as this merits the efforts of members to put a good debate regarding the transaction between sellers and buyers towards fish and the like. This is a very good thread honestly and I'd prefer this not be lost among threads in The Lounge.

Not rude IMO, your the one who was ruder, as stated if you dont like the price of the seller dont buy and dont waste his time and your time argueing. Sellers can sell almost anything at any price and if they sell it good on them. I do get why you were asking "what makes them so special", i thought u just took it a bit overboard thats all and the " i can get em for this price" bit. If i was that dude selling them i wouldnt bother if somone did that to me.

Cam

just turn him away and don't waste his, yours and our time.

If you like it, you will buy it, if you dont, then dont, as simple as that ^^ no need to argue ^^

and my dad's discus eat pellets, cost less than $5 per month :D
