thanks everyone, for the advise

part of me wants a lawyer, but dang, it seems like such a hassle. plus i seriously don't think it's gonna earn anything earth shattering

part of me is thinking i'm just gonna give him my pictures. if he cuts me a check, he cuts me a check

I would still let him know you plan to go the lawyer route if he's serious about it calling some key contractual points suggested above. See what his reaction/response when you suggest bringing in a lawyer. No harm done.

first thing that must be checked out legally is:, public performance figures similar to the MMA fighters, generally "own" copy-right usage on their character images. your art is also based on already-published images of them.
so the first question is to find out whether their image use is copy-righted and, if so, will they allow use of it. If so, either each performer may require permission and fees. will they share any rights with you. ?
I don't know anything about MMA association. it is also possible that rather than copyrights per artist, the association managing them owns such copyrights and may give permission , and collect payment the same way ASCAP and BMI do for songs [the country’s two leading performing rights organizations (PROs) collectively represent songwriters, composers and music publishers]
Think of how Disney owns exclusive rights to their characters. Not just any old individual Joe can sell items with their images on them.
If the MMA characters are not well represented, this may differ for them.
If the performers or association are "hungry" enough, sharing profits could be appealing. but usually a quality-approval is also all connected to use.
I would not just hand it over to some squirrel to use. in the end, you share liability, as well as potential profits.
EVERYthing you have already posted in public domain is evidence, (if things will be "for sale") and so are your correspondences with this clown.
Why give permission to HIM, when you potentially have a larger market by working WITH the ones who own copyrights?
Good luck.,
Granny.

Lot's of good points here

so he tells me that he thinks people would by a book of my drawings. he says he would suggest i front some money for promotional stuff.

This is a classical example of scam.....I am sorry to disappoint but you'll be burned. Do not give this person one cent and you'll see the one finding all sort of excuses to get money out of you... .If you want to test that person and convince yourself, play them better at their own game.... Promise money, give nothing, especially not your personal details, although they probably already know too much...

So what exactly, besides getting money out of you, is that person going to do for you that you can't do yourself if you were to sell your drawings in some way?

I'd steer clear and wouldn't bother even with a lawyer. Save the 300 bucks for the lawyer on promoting your own stuff or compiling your own book if that's what you dream about.

petspoiler petspoiler , granny! long time no see. and yes, you made some very good points. there are a lot of copyrighted questions and stuff that I don't have the answers to. for sure the ufc does not want anyone reproducing/distributing their material for profit. I'm not sure about drawings, though, you can't take a picture or video from their website and use it without permission for sure but if you just draw it, i don't know if that is illegal or not

bottom line is, i think you guys are right, i don't think i will give this guy anything. i'm glad i asked here first.

and C Coryloach , you are absolutely right. why would i give my stuff for someone to sell when i can publish and sell it myself and get all the profit.

thanks everyone, for your input
