I have an awkward question!

This observation speeks to the frequency of ocourance of bad genes within a given (fish) population. High fecundity (large broods very often) species tend to have large populations and will offer a greater number of 'desirable' offspring to select from, presumably with fewer expressed deformity or other unwanted characteristics.

Weeding out the undesirable characteristics through line breeding or natural predation is what limits the concentration of defects within a poulation.

High fecundity is what makes guppies and platys good for line breeding and fish like plecostomus less suitable.
