LOL I Know I'm lazy as heck! LOL
Again the lower pH is something that Ive understood to be beneficial to plant growth. I am not concerned by it instead appreciate it.
I do have a substrate composed 1 part gravel 2/12 part sand. It is between 1 and 2 inches in dept. Deep enough for some rooting yet not too deep to encourage many stagnant deposits of nitrate.
I am aware of crashes... I have had one tank crash this way, one of my first, many years ago. A 10gallon tank after about one year.
I have not had an issue since, except maintaining snail population or what not. My current tank has been running for about a yeah and a half and its predecessor, a smaller tank, for about three years. It was disassembled to make room for the larger. Substrate is moved filter media maintained to help prevent this.
Yet I know your right this is a possibility.
But, its not a sentence.... Going back in time, maybe this is a good idea maybe not, for the thread starter's question...
A healthy aquarium does not NECESSARILY need half its water to be removed every week or a weekly water change to stay healthy.
