i heard a crack i think..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look for air bubbles inside the heater. That's a dead give away that it is compromised.

Oh, so I have to take it out of the cage huh? (ofcourse underwater!!)

and I think someone wrote on one of the forums that their heater broke when doing a water change..does it happen often?

what are the fumes though?

Yes this can happen when the glass is hot and you pour cold water onto it. Did you unplug it while it was on then pour in cold water? I have had Ebo Jager cracked from water change but still worked like a champion. Now I switched all my heaters to Visi Therm Stealth so I don't have to worry about glass cracking or breaking.

hey do your visitherm heater have the ability to causse fish and turtles a burn?

actually, the water temperature is around 74F..it's supposed to be 78F.

I add lukewarm water to it..is that bad? It's the water that's been out for the day.

And nobody has still answered my fume question..

You will see waves in the tank from the heater if your water is cold. That is normal. Also, why do you say the water should be at 78? If the heater has a setting at 78, that is for a tank rated specifically for that heater, you might need to turn it up.

If it cracked it would have filled with water and isn't heating your tank anymore. If your tank is still the right temp I doubt it cracked. If you have any doubts unplug it and inspect it.

I've had 2 submersible glass heaters crack on me, one brand new RIGHT after we bought it, so I don't buy them anymore. I wouldn't be surprised if it did crack.

After having a glass heater crack on me, I now only buy the Marineland heaters made of plastic casing. I even dropped one on my ceramic tile floor once...they just don't crack.

The "fumes" are just caused by water at differing temps. refracting light differently, It is like the shimmers you see looking out across hot blacktop.

stick your hand in the tank, if it shocks you then it has cracked the heater..............good luck

I would have to agree with that. If water is in contact with the heating element, it would probably cause a short. Might even blow a breaker.
