These guys are ground dwelling lizards and prefer to have a warm and cool side to their enclosure. The warm side should have a basking light and a temperature in the high 80's. The cool side should be kept in the low to mid 70's. They really like humidity and the recommended humidity level for this lizard is 80-100%.
These are very shy, secretive lizards that do not like being handled much, but some individuals settle down over time with brief daily handling sessions. They make an excellent display animal.
As for swimming, humm......I don't know if they like swimming. But in the wild they can be found along river banks.
