if your heater is still turning on when the temperature is above its set point, i suggest you throw it out and get a new one because it's broken. THAT'S "common sense".

taking the heater out of the tank because you don't like the look of it is reasonable... but just unplugging it for no reason makes no sense to me at all.

the reason to leave it plugged in is that you're not wasting time and effort to plug and unplug your heater unnecessarily. i don't know, do you unplug your toaster when you're not using it?

i didn't mean to irritate you with my questioning, i was just looking for a little insight as to why some people unplug their heaters. i thought i might have been missing something, but i guess not.

That means if your heater is set to 78º and your tank is at 79º, your heater will never, ever turn on unless it MALFUNCTIONS, which is what happened here. People, do not unplug your heaters. That's asking for a surprise temp drop if your house suddenly chills. There's no good reason to unplug a heater in working condition because part of its job is to stay OFF when it's too warm. The end.

Ever heard of air conditioning? Not everyone's house is the same temp as outside. It was 98 at my house today, and the room my 125 is in was at 68. Little too cold for tropicals. Buy good heaters, then there won't be an issue, or a need to constantly plug and unplug your heaters when the temp changes. Pretty easy to figure out.

Common sense, or no sense at all? Don't be cheap on an such an important part of your fish tank, then there is no need to unplug them. They are designed to work that way. What happens when a cold front comes through, the temps plummet, and you forget to plug in your trusty heater that apparently won't shut off? Do you sit by your tank 24/7 to monitor it and decide when to unplug your heaters? Because I have news for you. That's what thermostats do! And all heaters worth anything have one built in for FREE! I suggest you use it.

And if the heater was bad, it was gonna do this anyway whenever the heater was plugged back in, even if it was the winter. So for all of you screaming to unplug them, its a moot point anyway.



To the OP, I suggest either Eheim Jagers or the Fluval E series. I like the aqueon "stealth-type" heaters too, but I haven't used them enough to recommend them.

If your heater is going over the set temperature, than common sense would be to get a more reliable one.

Why bother spending the extra few cents? I'll tell you why. Why the hell would you risk your fish dying from temperature swings just to save a few cents.

As for everyone else that unplugs their heaters, There is NO need to unplug your heater, EVER. Unless it malfunctions or something.

@OP: Go with the Eheim Jager series. Pretty good brand IMO.

i personally dont use a heater and my fish are nice and healthy.

Between the lights up top and the normal room temp, I keep my heater unplugged during warm months. I have an electronic thermometer that I watch constantly and replug if it happens to drop to an undesirable level.
