The death toll has now been raised to three after my Venny ate yet another rainbowfish. Now like, these fish aren't small, they are almost half his size yet he keeps eating them. How is that even possible and how is it that I never see any remains of the fish or the fish hanging out of his mouth for that matter. I was thinking about returning that rainbow to the store as he was the prettiest I've seen and he deserved to live, just to walk over to the tank and he be missing. This fish wasn't small. I don't know how this pike does it. He eats the Rainbows, but doesn't eat the clown pleco who sits on his head all day.

Am I just crazy or what?! :nilly:

A fish half the size of a pike is probably considered small, seeing that your Venny is an aggressive piscivore. Just because it hasn't eaten your clown pleco doesn't mean that it won't -- once the rainbows are gone, he may start looking for other small fish to eat.

IMO you should only be keeping him with larger, more aggressive fish if he's eating tankmates. It's not a behavior that he's likely to stop as long as there is live food available to him.

thats the thing, the Rainbows have been in here for months without issue, now for whatever reason hes just picking them off. I also had the clown and an L-52 long b4 the rainbows. As far as being aggressive, I have a Meeki in there also that he chills with all day everyday. So he hasnt really reached the point of snuffing out everything in the tank.

I have 5" lucius that is knocking off my columbian tetras. I feed this tank 3 times a day so it's not like he's going hungry. Every other day or so I'll notice one less in the school and a pike with a fat belly.

Well I was thinking of trying rainbows next, so glad I read about your outcome prior to purchasing those guys.

Just saw my guy snatch the second to the last columbian tetra - wow.

And I had been trying to catch the little guys to get them out of their, so darn hard to get a little fish out of a 150g tank.

Really want a top level schooling/dithir fish but the way his appetite is going I don't think that's going to be a possibility.

What kind of pike do you have? So far he hasnt tried to eat my Meeki, which honestly shocks me more than anything.
