I just heard something recently I had never heard before. One of the reasons, if not the most important reason, for frequent water changes while keeping juvenile discus is that juvenile discus expel a chemical that stunts their growth. The guy that I was talking to said he has a friend who has had his discus tank on a constant 24/7 water change since August and that his discus are over 12". Of course his water bill has been quite high!

I don't think it's ever been proven that they do secrete a mucus that slows their growth, but it is known that they grow faster with constant water changes.

I think the guy with the 12"+ discus just proved it too.
Oh yea, this guy with these discus was told that they were stunted and would never reach their full adult size.

I don't think it's even possible for discus to get to 12"+, maybe 12cm+...
And I thought that all cichlids secrete hormones that stunt their growth.

Edit: the largest adult size I've found listed on the internet is 8 inches

You've got to get out more, man. ;) I've seen foot long discus at local pet stores. Big as my head. It actually kind of scared me.

I thought all fish released metabolic stunters.

I've never seen a 12" discus. They thought of it makes me laugh. If it were possible, then why haven't we seen them in the wild or pics of them in someones tank. A 12" discus would be the talk of the town and pics would be everywhere..................

^Yes it's true but it's not only Discus, as stated. We actually had a lenghty disscusion about this in the CA/SA forum a few weeks ago.

The biggest Discus I've ever seen was a solid 9" in dia. Now get a ruler and look at how big 9" in dia truly is. 12" has to be pushing thier upper limit if even possable in captivity, I've seen them kept in constant drip systems where they don't get to 12". I'm not buying that without a picture.

Yeah, and I went to an lfs a few days ago and they had a 9" guppy and a few 5-6' silver arowanas.

Edit: Oh and I forgot to mention the 18" panda cory they had.

Really, you guys. They were in a display tank of about 240 gallons. It was mostly plants, but there were four or five of these monster discus. If not 12" I guarantee they were at least 11". I'm looking at my Oscar right now. Yup. That's about the size. Heck, I'll call them on the phone and ask right now.

EDIT: I called, but the girl said they never measured them so she didn't have an exact measurement, just that they're still the biggest she's ever seen.

At least check out these 9" 'ers.
