This is my G/F's pond. I am guessing its about 1000gals, 10X4X3. It has several HUGE Koi, and some goldfish. There are 3-4 Plecos in there, but I have never seen them. It was here when she bought the house. I tried explaining to her that fish need oxygen. Its a choice between being "Happy or Right." Well, since I have absolutely nothing to do today, I tried my hand at a DIY filter. She was currently using a shoebox size chamber, 1/2 was a UV chamber, with a bulb that has never been changed, and the other 1/2 was a piece of foam. Thats it. Well, my set-up has been running about an hour and I can see a difference. Let me know what you think. I plan to add a UV filter as soon as Lowes has them back in stock. Plus I have to change the arrangement. This is just a temp "emergency" set-up. It will go back behind the waterfall soon enough. Also, I plan to raise the pump, and get the return below the surface. FL doesnt have too cold of winters, but I figure every bit helps. Also, I have a tank set-up in the house for the Plecos, as soon as I can see to catch them.
Looking out the back door.

I wonder how big those plec's are.

Congrats on the DIY filter, how about a more detailed description.

Oh, also it's mandatory for a newbies girlfriend to be in the first picture posed, It's in the rules somewhere you can look it up :D.

Reminds me of the joke "Wanted: woman with house and pond, send picture of pond"

Keep up the good work,

Nice pond. I'm sure the fish are already a lot happier :D

I woke up this morning and the water is just about cyrstal clear. You can actually see the bottom now. I am going to Lowes to get some cinder blocks to raise it up by the waterfall. I am going to see if they have a UVC also. Even though I may wait till summertime for that. I want to fashion some kinda spray bar as well.

The tub is pretty basic. Top couple of layers is eggcrate to spread the water as much as possible. Second layer is pillow "Poly Fill". Then another layer of eggcrate, then about $40 worth of pot scubbers. Then eggcrate about 4 inches off the bottom of the tub. I am using a 2" drain that keeps about 2 inches of water in the bottom. The pump is a 1300gal/hr generic brand, but it moves some water.

I saw 1 of the Plecos this morning for the first time. I dont think I can bring them inside for the winter. All I have is a 20L, and they are about 10inches lond. Theres supposed to be 3-4 of them in the pond.

Here you can see the difference in the other post with the fish. Once the sun comes up, Ill try to get some better ones. Stupid daylight savings time.

What kind of people leave such huge Koi when they sell the house?!!!

Soon it will look like hankn's Avatar :headbang2.

But then your going to have to feed the plecos :D.

Good Job!

I would consider it crystal clear now. Its looking great. I actually counted 3 Plecos earlier. She doesnt know if its 3 or 4 in there. I am fixing to move everything and get the waterfall going.

A local friend is supposed to give me some Hornwort this week. I bet my G/F I could get it crystal clear in a month, I wish I knew it wouldnt take that long. She wouldnt bet anyway though.
