nobody has posted in either of those forums in hours, and this is somewhat relevant to JD's:

I just took an aquarium off my friends hands; 20 gallon (24x12), has a jewel and a jd, both around 3". reading up on jewels, some sources say their max size is 4", others say 7". From your personal experience, how big do jewels really get? I know the JD will eventually need to move to my 55 (after my growing O and RD are moved to a bigger aquarium), but would that jewel be good in the 20 (by itself) for life? Also, should I anticipate any aggression while they are juveniles? I know the jewel is African, but are their needs similar enough to those of JDs that they will be compatible for the time being?

They seem to be doing fine, and have been together for a few months before I aquired them today.

if they get up to 7", I wanna get a bigger aquarium (35 or 40) and keep him with the JD, or another jewel. if they only get up to 4", I'll get another jewel as a tank mate.

I'd like to know from somebody with experience with them how big (or small) i can realistically expect the jewel to be when mature. the difference between 4" and 7" is pretty significant.

that explains that. I'll post some pics tomorrow, then.

thanks

the typical red jewels typically grow 4-5"...the ones that grow larger are the 5-spot jewels I believe. i've never heard of a red jewel growing up to 7"...not to say it's not possible but I've never heard or read anything that would suggest that they do

Because CA/SA cichlids rule and Africans drool. :headbang2

my common red jewels are 5"and their growth has kinda stopped as of now

frempongi, elongatus, and fasciatus all get around 6-7"

right...those were the 5 spot jewels I was talking about...they do get larger than the more common red jewels. the more common red jewels don't get as large. :)
