I know this belongs in the African or General Cichlid section, but

thanks. hes almost certainly not a five spot. he (she) has one prominant spot and two kind of bars/spots that come and go.

they are exremely skittish still, all they do is hide behind plants. I was considering putting a couple 1-1.5" convicts in there, to kind of act as dithers. would this be recommended, or do you think it would overcrowd a 20 gallon and have the opposite effect?

I think you could find some better dither fish. Maybe rosy barbs? Buenos Aries Tetra? The convicts don't look quite as pacifist to me, especially if they breed.

I've never seen fish so skittish as this. usually when I read posts about "what's wrong with my fish" I kind of roll my eyes.

but its been over five days now, and neither the JD or Jewel have gained any color. they both just stay cowared in the corner, only coming out at night (i see them by the light of the TV). they haven't eaten or anything. I know its just going to take some time, but how long can juvie cichlids go without food?

would anyone recomend for or against adding barbs or tetras to make them realize there is no huge predator going to eat them? would throwing a couple of small convicts in there make matters worse?

I've never seen fish act this way for more than a couple/few days before returning to normal.

any suggestions would help.

my O and RD are both very mild tempered, so I think that's the best option. the 55 is way overstocked with cons right now. I have 15 of 'em!! (I just took 9 off somebody that was going to flush them all). I'm taking all those cons to the LFS tomorrow (hopefully in exchange for one baby GT, that sounds like a fair trade, no?) so its probably best to save all that fish moving for the same day. maybe I'll take the Jewel in too...

I've got 4-500 that are around 1" -- oh right! When full grown. Rong answer. Sorry! (But they sure are cute when they're little!)

Jewels are interesting, and are agressive towards about everything but prefer not to be alone. Finding sets that work is problematic (I lost 5 to come up with 2 breeding pairs and an odd ball that got thrown in with a huge oscar, a similarly displaced convict and some red bay snooks.) and may not be your interest at all. He/she alone will, however, get bored.

The water parameters for both fish are similar enough to keep together. What are you feeding them, what was your friend feeding them? What kind of filtration is there? What is the water quality, conditions? I have 2 4-5" Red Jewels in with 2 Oscars, 5" and 8". The only problem I have, is that the jewels just bred again. When I take the babies out in a few days, all the fish will be fine together. (until more babies arrive 2 weeks later)

I went ahead and put the JD in my 55, got rid of the jewel and about 9 baby cons. got a 1.5" GT, growing out in the 20 for now.
