I've been thinking about this for awhile. I really like the genus parachromis. I only have a 180 gallon tank though. I like breeding pairs, but obviously they get aggressive in a hurry.

Which of the five species of parachromis would be a good fit for a breeding pair in a 180? Could there be any tankmates?

What if no pairs were in the tank, how many individual fish from parachromis could be in there? Should they all be female, or all male, to avoid hybrids? Any tankmates?

I think a cool setup would be a tank large enough to house one breeding pair of each: dovii, friedrichsthalii, loisellei, managuensis, and motaguensis. How large and what footprint do you think the tank have to be then?

This topic is completely open to discussion.

i keep a female freddy, what i believe is a male mota, a breeding pair of jags and a what anyones best guess was a loisellei/texas hybrid in a 220 with a couple others.
Stays pretty peaceful.

A pair of jags would be sweet alone in a 180. or probably a pair of freddy and a pair of lois. I think Motas are too aggressive to get along although they might.
A Female lois, fred and RTM with a male jag in a 180 would be pretty cool too.

doviis get too big for your tank I would do a pair of freddys, trms, or loiselleis..... Or a pair of jags,......if you want a community i would do a male jag a male rtm, a male Loiselei, and a male freddy...

with that size tank and tank mates i would do a pair of loisellei's they are not as aggressive as the other species of parachromis , but it also depends on how aggressive the other tank mates are as well.....rtm's ar friggin crazy and i think are more aggressive than jags just stay smaller ....

I'd say go for the loisellei! :)

Not in a 180 you wouldn't.

If you wanted a breeding pair of each you would need a several thousand gallon tank. A pair of any of the other species would be fine in a 180 gallon. I would suggest a pair of jags.

I never stated I wanted a breeding pair of each in my 180. That was just an idea of what size tank would be needed for such a feat :-)

Right now I'm tossing around the idea of having one breeding pair or trying for two, or just doing the community male thing. Omitting Dovii in every case of course.

They all work. Parachromis for strong bonds and if you raise them together in the 180, they'll most likely do great. My biggest tank is a 220 and I have a pair of dovii. They're currently alone in a 150 and that's where they will stay for quite some time. When I had them in a community setting I would sometimes move them into a 40 breeder to spawn until the fry were swimming.
If are willing to upgrade in a few years and if tank size is the only thing keeping you from owning a pair of dovii, get one. Of course, for any of the others upgrading is no concern. Good luck, let us know which you decide.

Jags for sure too small for dovii pair imo jags the next best thing
