Lighting my tanks.

Is it OK to leave the lights on all of the time?
I feel that it may stress the fish more .
How many of you do this , or what are your tank lighting habits?

i leave mine on 24/7, i use them as night lights, just have to scrub the algae off the front once every few months, the fish are used to them

I have tryed keeping the lights on for long periods of time and I didn't like fish reacted to it. They didn't seem as active and weren't as agressive at feeding time then they are when the lights go on and off every day. So my opinion is to not keep them on 24/7.

Fish DO need to sleep.

It is called 'acute' stress.. Small amounts of stress over a long period of time. It will stunt their growth, and make them more prone to infection. They will not be as active or grow as quick. It will also cause Algae problems and increase Nitrates because the fish being forced to stay awake and use energy, increasing their metabolism, making them produce more waste. They will eventually start to go 'stir-crazy' and pace the corners of the tank, looking for coverage.

Not good Fish Husbandry Practices.

I leave 1 side of my 90 on most the time and turn the other off at night I leave the option of light or dark to them and they seem to not care either way

Is it OK to leave the lights on all of the time? No fish do need a period of darkness in which to rest and feel secure in so doing
I feel that it may stress the fish more .Yes it will
How many of you do this , or what are your tank lighting habits? 8-10 hours on the rest off
and a total lack of artificial light once a week,it isn't always sunny in the great outdoors-Anne
If you feel the need for night lighting i suggest moonlights or red LEDs

its posts like these from rock and fry that make me think a lot of fishkeepers don't give a sh*t about their fish, just like a toy or an ornament.

They are beautiful animals in your care - give them a bit more respect, let them sleep at least, jesus.

i don't use the conventional lights you guys are thinking about for the tanks i keep lighted, sorry, i should've considered that, i shine a long life incandescent through the wallpaper from the back, it is dimly lighted and there are plants and caves for the fish to hide in

i wasn't aware that there were so many ill effects, my fish have always been calmer and less jittery with the lights on and i have seen fish deprived of light that become extremely jumpy around people, so in my experience light is good

i've seen comments and articles that say your fish will grow faster with constant lighting, that's contradictory to stunted growth, i don't know if either is true

i mean, how much of your comments are based on experience and how much are just theories or thoughts?
