I looked up obese in the dictionary...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am in Britain and have got one. Not had him for very long and he is still a bit shy with the lights on but is getting bolder. They eat anything and everything. The other day I had a problem when a stingray pounced on a cichlid and I thought I would save/move the other one of a simliar size. The only place I could put was in the gulper tank. It was about double the length of the gulper and deep bodied - I thought no way will he eat that. Next morning it was gone as well. I was gutted to loose both fish and will not add anything other than plecs to the Gulper tank from now on.

I thought I was going to loose the gulper as well because he was so full it was pushing on his swim bladder causing him to float upside down. I turned off the lights thinking I was going to loose him. He made it through the day and was a bit better the next day. After about 4 days I was feeding the plec in the tank some prawn and him swam up and grabbed it ready for more!!!

They are great fish with huge mouths and even bigger appetites.

If you are interested Tim look in PFK this month as Richard Hardwick has done an article about big mouths and it includes the gulper. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone...I try to make them as happy as possible. :D

I can totaly understand the concern about the ability to eat tankmates. I've actually been lucky in that I've had my rtc/tsn in there with them for about a month now and they get along very well...other than the rtc/tsn stealing food from the slow-arse gulpers.

...fingers remain crossed.

Mine got that big before too
But it's ex-owner trained it well I think
Mine will not hunt at all and it's in a community tank with 3 buffer goldfish which is getting bigger by the day

And because last time it's ex-owner fed it 1 prawn a day, it doesn't really want to eat more than 1 prawn a day too...which resulted in my hubby force-feeding it -_-"

Yeah ... till it becomes food for one of those "slow arse gulpers" Jokes ;)

LOL...well, it keeps him on his toes. At the rate my rtc/tsn is growing, my gulpers are going to be lunch soon. :grinno:

Mine don't hunt either...they are definitely lazy SOBs. One of my gulpers is kind of like that...only eats one, maybe to jumbo shrimp every two days. The fat-arse in these pics will eat until he's packed from tip to tip.

LOL.
nice fat gulper.
wish mine would eat like that.

LOL...he is indeed fat. He stole 2 pieces of shrimp from the other gulper (the "picky" one) after he ate 3 for himself so I figured I better grab a few shots of him packed with almost a half-a-dozen pieces of jumbo shrimp. :D

How is your guy doing, channa? Has he developed an apetite yet?

nice gulper
nice huge belly
if ever we have a cat belly potm a gulper is the winner hands down
*wondering where is kolstix, he has a really nice set of cats*

:WHOA:
I think Gulpers are easier to keep than Tigs

Maybe you would like to share what went wrong?

My Gulpers come off as lazy, but they still manage to do a good job hunting though. Well sort of they eat goldfish that are about their size. Got my pet store to get me some extra large feeders 4" at $1.49 each. They keep them seperate from the other feeders which keeps them healthier. The Gulpers just hover in one spot totally looking harmless till a fish gets within several inches of it's mouth. Then they turn abruptly toward said fish and it's gone. I tried braking them of fish, but they won't eat anything cept feeder's and frozen silver sides. I starved them and tried shrimp which they'll eat from my hand then spit it right out. I tried beefheart, earthworms, red wigglers and blackworms. Interestingly enough they will eat live brineshrimp. Love watching them eat the brine as they look like they're spazing. They start turning abruptly in one direction then another snapping those huge mouth's all the way.
