I love Royal Plecos but damn....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yup,
I want to get a Royal, but this is what is stopping me.
Don't want all the wood in my tank to be destroyed, and don't want the mess that would go with that.

Unless u have an army of them, I'm pretty sure u are safe for a couple of years. And the only mess they leave is their bio. But its alot of bio.

What's up, Fishgeek! Maybe an additional canister (or 2?) strictly for mechanical filtration. Attach a pre-filter sponge onto the intake, and onto your other powerhead, as well. Nice stocklist btw, would love to see a FTS?!!

Change your wood type. I had three (only two now) Royals that are about 7" each and my saw dust is minimal. I feed half a zucchini twice a week and the next day or so I have tons of poop shaped zucchini pellets blowing around the tank but that's about the worst of it. I also have a lot of plecos and am not blaming all of that mess on just the royals. If you have that much wood in your tank you may want to use a slightly more dense driftwood.

yes feed it wafers and it will chew less on your wood! sup bubba, didn't know you were into plecos...hows the little guy I gave you doing?

Wow never new a pleco could be this much trouble to keep I have a 8 inch l330 and 4 othere s and its nt that bad I'm also buying a 7 inch l190 tomorrow hopefully it doesn't get worse . But I would get some denser drift wood and a ac110 works for me. Either way hope it all works out good luck.

Yoda1, I wouldn't say they ruin wood but they do create a lot of floating particles as a result. They sure are beautiful though!

Phulltanks57, What's up bud!? been a long time. I'm just getting back into fish.

tigerjace, Was it the tiny L114 i picked up from you? He's a cute little guy and hides all the time so it's a treat when I get to see him. I have him in a bare bottom discus tank w/ minimal decor so I can see where he rests at any given time.

Regarding wood types.. I noticed the Royals like the soft manzanita more than the malaysian drift wood so I prefer to keep it in there despite the sawdust.

I have managed to minimize the sawdust by always keeping a full piece of zucchini in the tank. It disappears after three days by which time I do a water change and clean filters. The tank and I have found a rhythm so long as I keep this up. I know its a touch overstocked and it doesn't help that I added two baby oscars recently on impulse but it is my grow out tank while I hunt for my 480g or 600g!!!
