I am absolutely crazy about most Central and South American cichlids, and in the last couple of years I think I had just about every common cichlid under the sun.

Couple of months ago, for whatever reasons, I have decided that keeping smaller fish is better. At which point I picked up bunch of extra 10 gallon setups and converted my 30 and 55 gallon to Tetras, Angels, Discus, Corys, and a couple other misc. small fish.

Oh boy do I regret it! Not only are they absolutely boring and unresponsive I have sold some of my absolutely favorite pets to get these little ****ty Discus. I have sold my female Red Devil which was absolutely the best fish I have ever owned, my male Green Terror, and a Convict pair that I had since day one in this hobby.

I still could not get myself around to going back to Cichlids but after introducing some new Discus to the tank, one of which had fungus, ended up killing half the tank! Medication simply did not do much. I feel like I finally managed to get it under control, will medicate for another couple of days, after which Ill start carbon filtering everything and selling off all the small guys that are left.

Lesson learned.

I am in the market for a male Red Devil and Green Terror!

for me its a dynamic hobby, i have piranas for a while, then cichlids, then pirahna again, been doing that for years, have also had gars and crappies, now im going to bass or pikes. no regrets, thats the beuty of fish keeping, they dont seem to live that long so you always get new ones about the time you get bored of the old. i have like 6 cichlids left in my tank, kinda lookin forward to their demise so i can get new ones.

That sucks that you made that mistake. I think everybody does that with there fish a least once. I know I have gotten rid of some fish that I wish I didn't.

I agree. I think you have to try things out to know where you stand. I went through a phase also where i got rid of most of my fun and interactive fishes and converted my tanks into 1) a Reef tank (w/ limited fishes), and the a 2) Planted tank (w/ some tetras). Both were really beautiful tanks - but it got boring fast <sigh>. Now - im getting back in touch with the stuff that got me interested in this hobby in the first place. - Its all about the cool fishes. :)

As for plants - i've learned to appreciate technology and the many lifelike silk and plastic plants they have to offer. :P

yes, that was a big, big mistake. never give up on the big New Worlds...there's one out there for everybody. :grinyes:

anyway, yeah Red devils and green terrors are pretty common so I'd just keep going to different lfs until you find one that you really like. don't look at it as a mistake, look at it as a new beginning. :D there are a lot of cichlids that were pretty hard to come by a year or so ago but are becoming more available. I can actually find V. argentea and N. haitiensis at an lfs now. :WHOA: hey, you ought to see if you can find some Cuban cichlids...they're really cool.

insanity vitali, small fish are generally very boring yes, as are discus :)

Big predators are fun, and generally more intelligent.
